What is Botox?

Botox is a type of neuromodulator, like Xeomin™ and Dysport™, that has received FDA approval for cosmetic treatments to reduce wrinkles. Botox is administered through a fine needle injection targeting specific muscles to relax and allowing other facial muscles to remain active in order to lift and open up the eyes, shape the eyebrows, smooth out the skin, and correct facial asymmetry. Neuromodulators act as a nerve block that stop the communication between the nerve and the muscles. This allows for the muscles to relax, and therefore prevents the wrinkling of the overlying skin. This leads to smooth skin that no longer wrinkles due to the muscles contracting. Botox has also shown to reduce overactive sweat glands, and is considered an excellent choice for people with hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating on the hands, feet, or underarms.

As with any cosmetic or aesthetic procedure, knowledge of the anatomy along with artistry is crucial in creating optimal results. As a board-certified dermatologist with an artistic eye, Dr. Shirazi has the vision, knowledge, and training to deliver customized treatments for a natural, more youthful, refreshed look.

Botox has been used for a number of conditions including the treatment of:

  • Horizontal lines on the forehead
  • Frown lines or deep creases in-between eyebrows
  • Excessive underarm, hand, or feet sweating
  • Wrinkles around the eyes or crow’s feet
  • Contouring the lower face
  • TMJ and excessive teeth grinding
  • Migraine headaches
  • Excessive eyelid twitches

Am I a candidate for Botox?

Neuromodulators such as Botox are suitable for treatment and prevention of wrinkles and fine lines on the face, such as those caused by aging skin, crow’s feet and frown lines. If you are in overall good physical and mental health, and bothered about wrinkles and fine lines, you may be a good candidate for Botox.

Some patients who are on certain medications such as antibiotics, blood thinners, muscle relaxants, allergy or sleep medications may not be suitable candidates for Botox. Pregnant or nursing women and other patients who have any kind of neurological conditions are also not candidates for Botox.

A board certified dermatologist is the best person to guide you on your candidacy for Botox.
When administered by experts, Botox does not have any lasting side effects. Minor effects such as redness, swelling, bruising and sometimes minor pain, if any, usually resolve in a matter of days.

When you visit Dr. Shirazi, she will evaluate your full medical history and advise you regarding your candidacy for Botox and the number of treatments you may need. It is recommended to inform the doctor if you are on any kind of medications or supplements.

What to expect during Botox treatment?

At the time of the initial consultation, Dr. Shirazi will evaluate and examine the areas that need to be treated. She will then design a completely individualized treatment plan, keeping in mind your medical history and goals. The doctor will also advise on how many Botox sessions will be needed and how many injections will be required.

Typically in the first year patients need about 3 to 4 sessions and from the following year on, they require two to three sessions depending on the extent of treatment needed. You may be advised to stop smoking and consuming alcohol at least one to two weeks prior to the treatment to aid in faster recovery and better results. Dr. Shirazi will also advise on stopping medications such as Aspirin and other anticoagulant medications or blood thinners to reduce the chances of bruising or bleeding.

The injections are given as an outpatient procedure since there is no surgery involved.

The procedure lasts for less than 15 minutes and you could easily schedule it during a lunch break or similar period. With no need for anesthesia, there is also no downtime and you can return to your work after receiving the injections. Any bruising, redness or pain usually subsides in a few days’ time. If needed, a topical numbing cream and other medications may be prescribed before, during or after the procedure and such decisions are taken after discussing them with you at the initial consultation.

The results are usually visible after three to seven days. The effect of Botox lasts between four to six months. The muscles which are stopped from excessive contraction are now relaxed. After the effect of Botox begins to wear off, the lines and wrinkles that may reappear are less severe because the muscles have been trained to relax by the administration of Botox.
